Is Your Hospital Making One Of These Hospital Pricing Transparency Mistakes?
Here's 5 of the most common Machine-Readable File Mistakes.
Mistake #1
Not Posting Anything
Did your hospital take a "wait and see" approach to price transparency? Holding out for the results of litigation or potential changes to the requirements is no longer a viable option. Hospital Price Transparency is here and CMS is ramping up enforcement efforts, having issued a $1M civil monetary penalty to Northside Hospital in Atlanta for non-compliance.
Mistake #2
Posting Based On Outdated Guidelines
Does your hospital have files posted that comply with outdated guidelines from 2019? Prior to January 1, 2021, hospitals were required to post a CDM and Inpatient DRG file. These files however, do not meet the current requirements for price transaparency.

Mistake #3
Not Updating Annually
Did your hospital take a "one and done" approach, posting a machine-readable file on January 1, 2021, but not updating it since? It is important to remember that CMS requires the machine-readable file be updated annually.
Mistake #4
Not Consolidating Data Into a Single File
Did your hospital break-up your data into multiple files (ex. separate files by payer or separate files for inpatient vs outpatient rates)? Remember, the requirement from CMS is for a "single" machine-readable file. Data can be broken-up into separate fields and tabs, but ultimately must be in one single file.
Mistake #5
Not Following File Format Requirements
Did your hospital post a file in XLS or PDF format? Did your hospital call your file "Charges File" or "CDM File"? Remember, CMS requires files to be in a non-proprietary machine-readable format (ex. JSON, XML, or CSV). XLS and PDF are not compliant formats. Also CMS has a standard naming convention for the machine-readable file __standardcharges.[json|xml|csv] (ex. 11111111_TestHospital_standardcharges.csv).
